Excerpt
With everyone thinking I was angry, I was taking a wild guess that it would be at least thirty minutes before anyone realized I was gone. That was a good head start. From the vague vibe I was feeling from Jess and the other traitors, I was looking at covering a distance of about four miles. I ran that nearly every morning, and the time it took to get there would allow my wolf and me time to figure out what we were going to do when we got there.

Cutting the bitch was what my wolf wanted to do, and I couldn’t honestly say that I wasn’t on board with that plan, but I was smart enough to know that I couldn’t take on eight werewolves on my own. I would have to find their hideout and come back with my pack. Bringing Phoenix and his clan to watch my back in case any of my wolves were really on Jessica’s side was a smart thing to do, so I would let them come, too, not that I would really get a choice in the matter; I doubted he would stay behind even if I begged him to.

A loud clatter had my head whipping around to look behind me again. An aluminum trash can lay on its side, its contents spilling into the street. A tabby cat peeked around the edge of the torn trash bag and I exhaled in relief. I was a sad case, indeed. I laughed at myself. I was not used to being the monster.

“I aim to change that, Mena.”

I rolled my eyes at my wolf. “You just be you and let me be me and we’ll get along just fine.”

Soft laughter filled my head and I had to smile. I had to admit that I liked her, regardless of how much trouble she was causing me with Phoenix. At least we had come to a compromise. I didn’t know how well said compromise was going to work out, or even if it would at all, but I was willing to try. Everyone deserved a shot at happiness, even with as insane as our case may be.

As I turned my head back around to continue on my journey, I ran smack-dab into the hard chest of a man. He was in shadow, so I couldn’t see his face. Stumbling back, I attempted to get my balance, but his arms closed tightly around my body, jerking me to him and trapping my arms down at my sides so I couldn’t move.

Struggling against his solid hold on me, I opened my mouth to let out a scream, but he twisted me around and clamped a hand over my mouth so fast that I didn’t know what was happening until I was being pulled backward, away from the security of the streetlights that lined the suburban road.

I raised my knee up then brought my foot down hard on the toe of his shoe. He let out a muffled grunt, but continued to drag me into the shadows.

This had to be one of the werewolves. The strength alone told me that. They had to have been watching my house, just waiting for me to leave. This bastard was going to kill me if I didn’t do something.

My wolf stirred under my skin. She wanted out and it was the first time since I’d been bitten that I agreed with that plan. With only a little more than human strength and quick reflexes, it wasn’t possible for me to handle a grown male werewolf on my own.

My final option, before letting my wolf free, was try to at least injure him. I hoped that would be enough to make him loosen his grip on me enough so I could run. If he gave chase, I would have to concede and let my wolf take over.

Gripping the dagger tighter in my palm, I rotated my wrist and drove the blade into his side as hard as I could. An ear-piercing ululation erupted from his throat and he let go of me. I didn’t wait or look back. I ran as fast as my legs would carry me, adrenaline and my wolf giving me the speed and strength to push my muscles past what a human would be able to endure.

“Mena… Mena!” I heard the cry behind me, but my mind wasn’t registering anything except panic and the need to get as far away from my attacker as possible. “Mena—wait! It’s me…” A strangled groan had me slowing. “…it’s… it’s Phoenix. I—I’m so sorry, Mena.”

I froze, not wanting to look back at the man, terrified that what he’d spoken was true. If it was—if I turned and saw those ice-blue eyes staring back at me, it would destroy any trust I had ever had in him.

“Please, Mena, I never meant to hurt you. I was only trying to scare you so you would realize what a stupid stunt going off on your own to find the killers was. What were you thinking?”

The blood rushed through my veins at an impossible speed, and fury washed over me in waves as I stood there trying to decide whether to walk away or allow my wolf to rip Phoenix’s head off. She was all for the second option.

I heard him cough, and then groan in agony. I imagined he was pulling the dagger out of whatever organ I had been lucky enough to hit. There was a lot of heavy, ragged breathing and two more guttural-sounding coughs. It appeared as though I had hit a lung. Too bad it wasn’t his heart! I wasn’t sure stabbing him in the heart with a silver blade would kill him, but I would have put money on a bet that it would have been a hell of a lot more painful.

I turned my head to glare at him, but the hatred I had expected to feel wasn’t there. He had fallen to his knees, and his head was bent, his eyes focused on the bright red stain spreading across his new shirt.

Shaking my head, I looked up to the sky and asked, “Why me?” After receiving no answer, I sighed and began the one-hundred-meter walk back to Phoenix.

As usual, her voice came out husky and choked when she tried to speak to him. “I’ll see you first thing Monday morning. Promise. But I can’t talk about this now.” She motioned to Emily, and Evan nodded but didn’t move. Jeez, he was so close.

They made small talk, and Paige actually found herself flirting with him a little, relaxing, while the line moved at a snail’s pace to the haunted house. She found out Travis was a neighbor whose parents traveled a lot. Evan also told her things she already knew: he had a brother in the Marines, his parents had retired to Montana to raise horses, lots of superficial stuff. She told him about her father taking her to haunted houses when she was a kid while her scaredy cat sister had stayed home with Mom. She mentioned her parents were dead, but didn’t give the details.

She couldn’t take her eyes off him. Dressed casually, he reminded her of the first time they’d met. He wore a black t-shirt and worn jeans along with the oldest pair of Converse she’d ever seen. His hair was mussed, as if he’d spent a long day at work, running his hands through it like a crazed man. With her constant avoidance of him, he probably had. A pang of remorse hit her hard. She hadn’t made this easy for him. It was time for her to step up and take responsibility. She’d hired him to do a job, and she needed to get over her school-girl crush and help him.

But it was really hard with him staring at her like that.

She could always blame the teenagers for her inappropriate thoughts. They were walking, talking, flirting hormones on legs. By the time they’d made it to the door, Travis had Emily’s phone number and they’d already made a date and were holding hands. She was positive that if she and Evan hadn’t been there they’d be making out. The teenagers that is, not them. Even though she’d relaxed quite a bit, her heart was still letting her know he was standing awfully close to her.

They went in like a train, with Travis volunteering to lead. Emily hung on to his belt loops followed by Paige. Bringing up the rear, one of Evan’s hands dropped protectively to her back. She ignored the warmth trickling through her t-shirt at the contact. Her heart pounded and her hands were clammy, but it wasn’t because of the fog, or the spooky lighting, or the clanging noises, or the zombies jumping out. It was all Evan Rocco, holding onto her.

As far as haunted houses went, this one was disappointing, or maybe she just couldn’t get into it with Evan’s breath on her neck, his hand at her waist, or his other hand snaking around her torso. The further inside they went, the closer they got. Travis was at the front of the line, jumping with every zombie clown that popped out, giving her ample warning of spooky things ahead. By the halfway point, Evan’s arms were around her torso, with her own hands clutching him while they walked in sync together, his hot breath on her neck warming her insides

At one particularly dark corner, Evan yanked her backward into an alcove, pushing her into the darkness. He leaned his forehead on hers while his forearms leaned on the wall on either side of her head, caging her in, keeping her from bolting.

“You have any idea how many times I’ve thought of this since April?” His body crowded her into the tiny, dark space while his minty breath sent her senses reeling.

“Haunted houses?” she offered weakly before his mouth met hers.

It was suddenly as if the puzzle piece she lost six months ago had been put back into place, and she melted into him as his tongue triumphed over the recesses of her mouth. He growled, a predatory rumble emanating from his chest that reminded her of that night last April, and she whimpered against him as he hauled her into his embrace, wrapping his arms around her tightly.

His tongue danced with hers, twining around inside her mouth while his hands roamed her body, cupping her ass. She twirled her fingers in his hair, bringing his mouth closer, fusing it with hers, unwilling to break this kiss which was rapidly undoing her—mind, body, and soul.

As her fingertips clutched desperately at his biceps, she marveled at how someone who was every bit as geeky as she was could be so fucking beautiful, because Evan Rocco was a seriously beautiful man. And this kiss was feral, something wild, causing her to throw caution to the wind and go with it for as long as it lasted.

Evan broke the kiss, leaning his forehead on hers again, his dark brown eyes consuming her. “Paige,” he breathed out ragged gulps of air. “What the fuck is happening?”

The Fixer Upper by Anne Conley #NewRelease #BaBB

From the author of The Stories of Serendipity, and The Four Winds comes a brand new stand alone novel, The Fixer Upper, by Anne Conley.

James, a UK based chef, has tried to make a career with EAT-TV, but his womanizing ways aren’t what they’re looking for with their wholesome family style image.  However, the producers of a new reality show about single life, The Fixer Upper, think he’s perfect.  His agent convinces him to give it a shot.  His overpriced bachelor pad is needing a mortgage payment, and he needs a job to support the tween-aged daughter that’s recently been dumped in his lap.
Margaret Dumas is control freak who has micromanaged her marriage to shambles.  When she makes a deal with her mother to quit fixing her up if she’ll do this new reality show, she thinks she’s won.  No more blind dates, no more friendly advice, no more “chance meetings” with her Mother’s friends’ sons.  The only catch is she’s got to go on detestable reality television and expose her dating habits to a total stranger who is supposed to “fix” her and make her a dating machine.  As if.

When Margaret meets James, they clash on the surface, but deep down they recognize something in the other that they want: redemption.

Excerpt from The Fixer Upper:

“So, tell me about yourself.”  James took a sip of the juice and managed to barely suppress his grimace.  Okay, so it’s not fresh squeezed, get over it.  Pushing her aloofness back in the forefront of her mind, she was better able to control her reactions to him and focus on the situation at hand.
“I’m thirty-eight, divorced, an accountant.  I live here with my dog, Puppet, he’s out in the backyard, or else he’d be in your lap, messing up your, uh… jeans.”  Looking at his jeans while she’d said that

screwed her up again, so she looked around the room.  “Not much to tell…”

“Okay, why did you sign up for the show?”
“Oh, that’s easy.  My mother did it.  I’m doing this to make her happy.  Not really interested in a relationship.  Divorce just finalized last month, and I don’t really see the point in a relationship at this moment.  But she’s brutal in her doggedness.”  She flashed him a smile and his faltered, much to her satisfaction.  “She’s signed me up for online dating, tried introducing me to sons of her friends, you name it.  I’m trying to get her off my back.”
He ran his finger over his bottom lip.  “So let me get this straight.  You have no desire to date, yet you’re on the show to find out how to date?  To be fixed up?”  He leaned back, his arms stretched over the sofa back.  “How utterly lazy of you.”
“What?  No, I’m not lazy.  Far from it—”  She started to explain herself, but he didn’t let her words come out.
“Sounds like it to me.”  He crossed an ankle over his knee in an infuriating gesture.  “You don’t want to date, yet you call us in to do all the work for you.”
Her nerves dissolved as indignation materialized.  She was suddenly angry at this man who came into her house with cameras to make her look like a complete loser.  “That’s not it.  I go out!”
James leaned forward, blue eyes sparkling with interest.  “Now we’re getting there.  Who do you go out with?”
“N-no one.  I go out to a bar by my office.  Alone.”  Margaret tried to steel her voice, but heard her resolve crumble in the hopelessness that her life had become.  She didn’t need this man to make her sound like a loser, she was one.
“Do you pick up men?”  he asked eagerly, and Margaret stiffened her backbone as he managed to make her habitual routine sound salacious.
“No!  How trashy!  I don’t do one-night stands.”  Loser.
“I didn’t say you did, pigeon, but do you speak to potential dates in this bar?”  His eyes roamed her legs, and Margaret crossed them self-consciously, to no avail.  The motion seemed to draw his attention further, and his tongue snaked out, resting on the corner of his lip.
“Um, not exactly.”  Would you please put that tongue away?  It’s highly distracting.  “I mean, I speak to them, to say I’m not interested.”
His gaze snapped back up to her eyes, and thankfully, his tongue went back to its typical place.  “So, you’re completely uninterested in dating?”
She shrugged.  “Not uninterested, per se, I just haven’t met anyone who meets my standards, yet.”
He steepled his fingers under his chin, as if deep in thought, and Margaret wondered if the affectation was for the camera.  “What, exactly, are your standards, Ms. Dumas?”
She leaned back and relaxed a little.  This was an easy question.  And it got the focus off her, at least.  “Well, he needs to be taller than me, fit physique, have ambition, be neat, attractive, work a good job, enjoy his mother, no children, be close to my age, and have a hobby.”  Margaret ticked each item off on her fingers like a shopping list.
“Well, that’s not too much to ask, is it?”  She couldn’t tell if he was being sarcastic or not, as she watched him make some notes on a notepad he retrieved from the case he’d brought in.  “How tall are you?”
“Five foot, nine inches.”
“How fit is fit?”  He stared at her, an unreadable expression on his face.
“Excuse me?”
“Do you want a muscle bound god, or are you content with a small spare tire, befitting a man of a certain age?”  His accent distracted her mercilessly, and she had to concentrate on his words instead of his voice.
“I’m not into steroid-users.  They don’t have to be that fit, but spare tires?  Um, I don’t think so.”
“Vague.”  He stood, and to her mortification, reached behind his neck and pulled his t-shirt over his head to reveal the perfectly sculpted torso.  Lean muscle, not too bulky, the smallest trail of reddish-brown hair leading to the snap of his jeans alluding to something impressive down there.  “Do you consider this fit?”
Her eyes were glued to the v formation on his abdomen.  Why did that part of a man’s physique always make her mouth completely fill with saliva?  Her eyes trailed back up over his defined chest—dips and valleys punctuated by a smattering of hair—to admire his wide shoulders.  She noticed his Adam’s apple on her way up to his kissable lips, smirking at her.  Was that a gleam in his eyes?
Shit.  He’d asked her a question, and she had no idea what it was.  Hoping an absent nod would be sufficient, she provided one of those before dragging her eyes away.
“Please put your shirt back on, that’s really not appropriate, um… I don’t think.”
She managed to release the breath she hadn’t realized she’d been holding when he put his shirt back on, covering the smooth tanned skin and muscles.  Plopping back on the sofa, he resumed his note-taking.
“Now I know what fit means, thank you.  I think the word ambition speaks for itself, but attractive has all sorts of connotations.  Can you elaborate on what you find attractive?”
His eyes were back on her, his gaze seeking answers, flicking back and forth between her eyes.
“Um, I like dark hair, but blond hair, as long as it’s neat is okay, too.  I’ve always been attracted to light eyes and smooth skin, but a certain ruggedness is okay as well.”  She bit her lip in thought, refusing to meet his eyes, instead focusing on the quiches perfectly arranged on the platter in front of her.  “I suppose a straight nose is in there somewhere, as well as nice lips… ” Her voice trailed off as her eyes rose, with a will of their own, to see him staring at her, that damned smirk on his mouth again.  Nice lips.  Plump, but not too much.  Definitely kissable.  She cleared her throat.
“He needs to have good manners, too.  No chewing with his mouth open, holds doors for ladies, things like that,” she added for good measure, noting to herself how squeaky her voice sounded.
He put his pen behind his ear and slipped his notepad into his case.  “So, let me make sure I’m clear.  You’re looking for a financially stable man in his late thirties, early forties, with hobbies, smooth skin, rugged appeal, dark hair, who works out regularly, has no children, good relationship with his mum, who holds doors for others, doesn’t smack when he chews, and aspirations for even more?”  He clapped his hands on his thighs as if he was about to stand.  “You, my dear, have impossibly high standards.”
One of her eyebrows arched in incredulity.  “Excuse me?”
“If there’s a man out there like that, I’m sure every woman on the planet would like an introduction, but we’ll do our best.  In the meanwhile, you need some work yourself.  If you’re going to hold others to such a high standard, you’ll need to go through some changes.”  He stood, towering over her, his eyes roaming her body, expression unreadable.

Saving Charlie by Anne Conley – #NewRelease

Book Blurb:  100,000 children are sexually trafficked every year in the US.  In the 1990s, Charlie was one of those children.  She’s spent her adult life getting past that, trying to become a successful business owner in Serendipity, TX.   Relationships are not goals for her.  In fact, she’s not even sure she has what it takes to be a part of one.

Les is a fool for love.  All he’s ever wanted was a girl.  Now that every last one of his friends are married, and in happy relationships with families, he can’t stop thinking about the sexy lady who sells house parts, even if everything about her screams at him to stay away.  He just can’t.
When they are thrown together on a cross-country road trip, Charlie’s past comes back to her full-force, long-buried memories inundating her.  Les seems to be the only thing grounding her to the present, when everything else seems to be trying to tear her apart.
While it has a HEA, the road getting there is long, rough, and dark.  Enjoy the ride.

Excerpt:

He was a fool for love–had been in love with nearly every woman he’d ever met–and had never really had a serious relationship.  He’d had a couple of seriously one-sided ones, but nothing ever stuck.  Sweetness wouldn’t be any different.

But she just might come and work for him, if he could get the price right.

He dialed her number and listened to it ring.

“Charlie’s Recycled Restoration, can I help you?”  Her sweet, throaty voice screamed sex at him, and he shifted in his seat to accompany the sudden tightness in his pants.

“Hey there, Sweetness.”

“Hey, Les.  Did your clients like any of the molding?”

“Yeah, I’ll be out later today to pick it up, but I was calling about something else.”

“Oh yeah?”  Her voice lowered an octave, and Les had to control the urge to start talking dirty. That wasn’t really his bag, but something about this woman made him think all sorts of inappropriate thoughts.

“How would you like to come over to the dark side…?”

“Excuse me?”

“How much is Charlie paying you?  I’ll double it if you come work for me.  I need someone with your knowledge and aptitude to help me.  And you’re good with organization and numbers.  Come on, please?”

“I don’t think so, Les.  I’ve got a really good gig here.”  He could hear her laughing, and it stung a little, but he was nothing if not persistent.

“What, are there benefits I’m not aware of?”

“You could say so, yes.”  She sounded cagey, but still playful, so he decided to play along.

“I can tack on some extra benefits, Sweetness.  You just name it.”  Her breath caught on that line, so he continued.  At some point, he probably shouldn’t have, but he couldn’t stop himself.  The husky timbre of his voice gave his intentions away.  “I got all sorts of benefits in mind for you, Sweetness.”

“I’m sure your benefits are…amazing.”  She was breathless, and Les did a fist pump in the air in spite of himself.  “But I really can’t.”

He wilted a little, but remained confident persistence would pay off in the long run.  “Think about it, the offer’s open.”  Defeated, he ended the call with the promise of seeing her that afternoon.  He’d try to time it so her boyfriend wasn’t there.  Maybe he could illustrate the benefits he had in mind.
