Tell us a bit about yourself
Well, I’m not nearly as funny as Charley and I do love coffee, just not quite as much as she does. I mean, I don’t worship it.
I’ve always written. I can’t remember a time when I wasn’t writing. I just didn’t know I could actually write books for a living. I thought all authors were either geniuses or alcoholics. I’m neither, so I didn’t think I could be an author. But I took a shot
anyway and the rest is history.
For the Charley books, everything! I was laying in bed once more, waiting for my turn in the shower, when Charley popped into my head in all her glory. But looking back, I’d say she is a collage of everything I love: humor, supernatural, badassness, irreverence, etc.
What are you working on now?
Right now I’m working on a brand new trilogy about a woman named Sunshine who is the sheriff of a small town in New Mexico. It’s everything the Charley books are but without the paranormal aspects. It’s more humorous, sexy mysteries.
Do you have any quirks while writing?
Yes. Wintergreen Lifesavers and lots of caffeine.
What are your hopes for the future?
To keep writing. It’s all I’ve ever wanted to do.
Do you have any advice for new authors about the publishing world?
Just keep reading and writing and working on finding your voice. Also, remember, the publishing world is a business. If they buy your book, it’s a business transaction. You have to realize that. For you, it’s about the art, the craft of writing. But publishing
is a business, so don’t take rejection personally and give them a product they can sell. It’s a harsh way to look at it, but it’s the truth.
