He’d had enough. This constant weight sitting on his chest was choking the life from Hawke. The price of Maddox was Hawke’s sanity. It wasn’t one he could afford to pay any longer. Anger carried Hawke’s feet outside, intent on settling things now. Waiting hadn’t gained him shit. He found Maddox at his car, shirtless and digging around in the trunk.

“What was that all about?”

Maddox glanced up. The closed expression on his face let Hawke know this was going to be a useless conversation. Maddox shrugged.

“You were horny. I helped you out. No big deal.”

No big deal. Hawke’s brain latched onto those three tiny words and began repeating them like a mantra. Anger grew with each pass. As usual, he was no big deal. “I’ve got some of your clothes in my backseat.” Hawke couldn’t believe how calm he sounded. Surely that wasn’t his voice.

Maddox didn’t seem to notice anything off. “You should throw them out.”

Hawke ran his hands through his hair, beyond frustrated. The guy couldn’t give him inch. Not ever. “At least take my shirt so you’ll have something. It’s my fault you’re without, and I can go home whereas you still have to work.” Maddox still wouldn’t look at him. He slammed the trunk closed. “Nah. It’s cool.” He flashed a fake smile, not meeting Hawke’s gaze. “Everyone likes me better this way anyhow.” He smoothed his palm across his bare chest, emphasizing his point. “They’ll never even notice when I’m off-key.”

Hawke wanted to punch him in the throat. Maybe then Maddox would understand what it was like to be incapable of drawing a single breath. The way Hawke couldn’t whenever he was around.

“I dreamed about you last night.” Heat flooded her face at the confession. She knew it must be the shade of a strawberry, but she lifted her eyes to his, holding his stare steadily, as if daring him to mock her words. For a moment, she could have sworn a look of triumph passed over his face, but it was gone as quickly as it appeared.

“What was the dream about?”

Marissa had thought that it was impossible to be any more embarrassed than she already was, but at his question, she discovered a whole new level of humiliation.

“Um,” she stuttered before admitting, “I don’t want to tell you.”

“Oh,” he crowed. “It was that kind of dream, was it?” While his eyes were shining with mirth, her face was on fire, and she really wanted kick him.

“Shut up,” she hissed.

“Ever as you command,” he said, but she could still hear the laughter in his voice.

Fanning her face, Marissa practically danced in place in her discomfort.

“Are you having some sort of fit?” Adriana, Marissa’s mom, asked, slicing through her mortification.

Marissa had not heard her approach and she shot a nervous glimpse at the tree line to find Harold gone.

“I was attempting a spell.” Marissa answered Adriana’s question absently while searching for any sign that Harold was still hanging around. When her mom remained silent, Marissa glanced over to find her watching her closely, and she pasted a fake smile on her face in order to ease her mother’s obvious concern.

“Okay,” Adriana said, drawing out the word and sounding as if she didn’t believe her, which was a spot-on observation, since Marissa was lying.

Sinners of Water & Fire review

I was lucky to receive an ARC of this book. It is the final book in the Sinners series and I have really been looking forward to reading it, but also dreading it because it’s the last one in the series. I was not disappointed; this was the best Sinners book the author has written and a perfect ending to the series.
The author kicks ass with this book where the gods come out to play and old friends reappears. The author and the fates wield their powers and leave surprises in their wake. Some of the scenes were so hot that I considered going outside to take a roll in the snow. I highly recommend this book to everyone.

I have to share one of my favorite lines from the book:
Must. Not. Pet. Strange. Men. She reminded herself sternly. 😉

I look forward to to reading the new series that the author is working on.
