Ensorcelled Jaunt

Push harder, her mind roared as her powerful limbs sprinted forward. Step by step, she was desperate to use her ability to go faster, to prove she was a warrior, like the rest of the Horde. Harder! she encouraged herself as she leapt over a fallen log, ducked under a low lying branch, and slid down a ditch into the small brook. The burning in her legs was a reminder––it was after her. She could hear the panting, its claws digging into the wet mud, and her own splashing as she ran through the spring. Her vision was disoriented from the caapi root tea she’d been given, which forced her to use her other senses to navigate the forest. Around her neck, she wore a black tourmaline pendant nestled inside an ancient symbol with which she was not familiar. It served as a ward to block the use of elemental abilities to the person who wore it, but Kaylin Wilde thought it was a miserable nuisance. Her long hair had been purposely cut to match the other Horde members. Shaved on the sides, all that was left of her raven tresses was a single, long braid, which bounced against her back. A few more feet. The air was chilled, and a fine mist had coated the surface of every plant, rock, and tree, making this jaunt even more dangerous. One mistake could be disastrous. The crisp air intermingled with the scent of pine trees, moist soil, and the strong, distinctively repulsive odor of the beasts chasing her. She needed a way to outrun them, but without her ability, she needed her wits more than ever. In the distance, the glistening water bounced off her salvation, and she knew what she had to do. Kaylin saw the long branch hanging over the small brook and realized she only had one shot or she would be done for. Moving to the edge of the water as her toes dug into the wet muck, Kaylin took two long strides and leapt onto a large boulder. With the force of the landing, she bent her knees and then catapulted herself toward the branch before her. Kaylin’s calloused palms connected with the rugged bark, and her fingers tightened around the limb. She lifted her legs just as she heard the loud snap of jaws clamping, ruthless growling, and her own labored breathing.

Tales of individuals marketing themselves as editors without even a moderate understanding of grammar rules, blog tours with absolutely zero engagement and planning, embarrassing covers, formatting that was a jumbled mess, and authors who brow-beat reviewers for poor reviews were just a few of the things discussed with this Publishing Round-table.

These individuals decided they wanted readers to have a place where they were guaranteed a Badass Reading experience. A place where the reader could be sure the book they purchased was professionally written, edited, formatted, covered, and promoted. So, Badass Book Society was born.

Then we started thinking…What constitutes a Badass Author? Is it an author who has a large following on social media? An author who consistently hits the Best Seller list (or says they do, anyway)? Or is a Badass Author an author who takes their writing and publishing seriously? Someone who pays or barters for editing, formatting, covers, promotion. You know, someone who puts their money where their mouth is.

While these professionals were sitting around brainstorming, the idea of having a directory, of sorts, to list reputable Indie publishing professionals started to take hold. What if we could list Badass Professionals who went above and beyond for their authors? What if we listed those Professionals who had the experience, knowledge, and originality to always produce stellar results? So, Badass Professionals was born.

My friend was brutally attacked and now she needs our help! #Crowdfunding #Charity #Help #BaBB

At 4:45am on November 17, 2014, Deena Rae experienced a home invasion and brutal attack from the perpetrator.

Had she not fought her assailant, she’d be dead and her children motherless. The attempted murderer stabbed her four times–in the pelvis, in her torso narrowly missing her heart, in her face, and lacerated her liverbefore running away into the darkness.

When the police came out, the attempted murderer was long gone, and cops say they won’t find the perp, because he has a fairly nondescript profile. I find it appalling no efforts are being made to get this dangerous man off the streets before he successfully claims the life of another unsuspecting victim. Thankfully, he failed with Deena.

Had Deena been sleeping that night rather than working the long hours single mothers often do when trying to support a household of four, she certainly would not be with us today. In February, her elderly mother experienced a horrific leg break resulting in surgery, and now Deena, who is trying to still heal from her liver injury, is still trying to work and take care of her mother, too. Her work hours have been cut severely, but the one thing that never gets cut are the steady stream of bills.

Bill collectors have been calling, and the medical bills for the household are piling up. Deena is a generous, loving woman who would do anything for anyone, and it hurts my heart to have to type this request for help. Not because it’s wrong to help someone, but because someone who radiates such love and kindness is rare, and the world would be a worse place for the loss of someone so beautiful in heart and spirit as Deena Rae.

Any donations are appreciated to ease the financial burden on her and her family so she can focus on healing and helping her youngest daughter recover from the trauma of seeing her mother covered in blood, thinking she was already dead, before the ambulance arrived.
