Please give a warm welcome to author Ann Denton
Tell us a bit about yourself
I’m Ann Denton and I’m a serial killer. Only of imaginary characters, but still, I think it’s important to put it out there, so you know where I stand. If you annoy me, an imaginary version of you might end up attacked by werewolves. Just saying. I write all kinds of fantasy and paranormal books.
I’m a stay-at-home-mom for my six and three-year-old and have been writing novels since I was pregnant with my oldest. Writing has always been an outlet for me, though I was trained as a playwright and screenwriter in college, not a novelist.
Also, apologies to everyone reading this, but I’ve got the market cornered on best husband in the world, so everyone else is just gonna have to settle. Wanna fight me on that? See paragraph one. 😊
Have you always wanted to become an author?
I’ve wanted to be a writer since I won 2nd place in an essay contest in 7th grade. I’ve always just loved storytelling. But at first, I thought I wanted to write for T.V. Dreams evolve.
What was your inspiration for your current book/series?
I have a couple series going right now. Tangled Crowns is my Reverse Harem series and it’s a series of medieval romantic fairy tales. I’ve always loved fairy tale remakes and while I don’t draw on any particular fairy tales for this series, I do love drawing on tropes, like going to the ball or fighting an evil beast. I really wanted to write a RH where the guys didn’t just fall into the girl’s lap. I wanted her to have to earn their love. So, that’s pretty much what inspired Knightfall, the first book in the series.
My other series, Lyon Fox, is a paranormal cozy mystery series. I created it originally as a wedding gift, throwing in everything I could think of that my friend might love. But I fell so in love with the world that I couldn’t stop writing about it!
What are you working on now?
I’m working on book two for Tangled Crowns: MidKnight and book four for Lyon Fox: Hexed Hit.
Do you have any quirks while writing?
I have to chew gum or I end up eating way too much. Sometimes I sit with my legs crossed and my legs fall asleep. I write with three screens and often keep an inspiration pic up on one screen, references on another, and the book on the third.
What are your hopes for the future?
I hope to write more series people love. And I’m seriously so in love with the RH world and the interactive fan base on Facebook. I’d love to eventually write a book where my readers choose what happens next every few chapters.
Do you have any advice for new authors about the publishing world?
Write. Then try something different. I started with a YA Fantasy series set in a post-apocalyptic world. I think maybe thirty people have read those novels. But then I created something for a friend who’s an avid reader. And then I genre-hopped again to RH.
Just keep writing. Test out different voices until one clicks. I never thought I’d end up being a writer who was kinda funny when I started. But now, I’m addicted to it. I will reread scenes I’ve written that crack me up endlessly. Life is an experience and writing is the same, sometimes you won’t know what’s right for you until you try it. (Unless it’s escargot. And then it’s never right. Ever.)
Do you have anything to say to your readers?
Thank you! You are amazing. Your support makes me tear up. Your compliments make me glow. You have no idea how much it means to me that you take a chance on my books. I am so thrilled to create things for you.
