Tell us a bit about yourself

Hi, I’m Mila, and I’m addicted to reverse harem novels. I’m 32, a business owner, teacher, wife, mom to my gorgeous two-year-old son, voracious reader, and now, a writer. I’m originally from Los Angeles but have moved all over the world and finally settled down in Croatia. I fell back in love with reading when my son was born. I was on an extended maternity leave, managing my business but not teaching, and found myself with some extra time while my son slept at random times. I started with rom-coms, moved into the dark and taboo, and then one day, I picked up Sunshine and Bullets by Coralee June in mid-2020. I didn’t know it was RH, but man, oh man, I haven’t stopped reading them since.

Have you always wanted to become an author?

It’s always been something I wanted to do but never made the time for. Work, family duties, any excuse I could think of constantly got in the way. This last Christmas, I found myself with three weeks off from work and an idea. Let me tell you, paying for childcare is a good motivator to accomplish something with those suddenly child-free hours. It’s definitely taken longer than those initial three weeks, but I managed to get the lion’s share done, and it made continuing that much easier for me.

What was your inspiration for your current book/series?

I’ve been drawn to the contemporary RH scene, but I needed older characters. Don’t get me wrong, I absolutely love the academy scene, but I teach that age, so I always age the characters in my head. Gang and mafia books have such detailed and rich organizational structures which call to my Type A personality. But, then again, I love humor. So I basically decided to write a story about a woman involved in a gang, runs their hitman crew but isn’t there of her own volition. I made her sweet, sarcastic, and snarky, really focusing on the duality that is human nature. No one is any one thing ALL the time. Why can’t someone be an assassin who is also sweet and sarcastic?

What are you working on now?

I’ve just about finished with the edits on book one of the series. And last night, I typed up the first chapter of book two. I’m hoping for relatively close release dates because book one ends on a cliffhanger. I adore cliffies, but also, resolution as quickly as possible.

Do you have any quirks while working?

I basically just need to have some alone time. If my son is with another caregiver or sleeping, I’m good to go. I like to write out plot points and scenes at night in a notebook that I want to tackle the next day. I find handwritten notes the best because I inevitably scratch things out to alter them after sleeping on the ideas. I also really like waking up at about five am so the house is quiet, and I know I’ll have about an hour or two of uninterrupted writing and coffee time.

What are your hopes for the future?

I love my work as a teacher, but I also never expected to love writing so much. I hope to find balance as time goes on, rather than waiting for a break from teaching to have the time to write. My main goal right now is to stay focused and complete my series.

Do you have any advice for new authors about the publishing world?

Ask any and every question that pops up in regards to publishing. The author community on Facebook is really inclusive and willing to help. I’m definitely still learning, but I’m feeling more comfortable navigating this new venture by asking and researching. The Facebook group 20booksto50k is an incredible resource whether you’re planning to make writing your full-time job or doing it for fun.

Thank you for taking a chance on a new author if you decide to pick up my book. I am beyond grateful for the support I’ve received, especially from my Alphas and Betas. Also, please write reviews for the books you read! They don’t have to be anything loquacious or bookstagram worthy, but they are so very important to authors.
