Tell us a bit about yourself

My name is Susan Hayes and I’ve been a published author since 2012 with more than forty-five books released. I live on the Canadian west coast and have lived within a few miles of the ocean for my entire life. I’ve got blue hair, more tattoos than my mother cares to acknowledge, and a life I love.

Have you always wanted to become an author?

Always. Somewhere in the pages of my high school yearbook, when I was asked what my goals were: one of them was “write a book that would one day be taught in schools. While I’m quite certain my sci-fi romances will never be part of anyone’s school curriculum, I certainly have achieved the first part of that goal.

What are you working on now?

Operation Fury, book three in my Sci-fi suspense series – Nova Force. It will be out in March.

Do you have any quirks while writing?

I find it really difficult to write if it’s too quiet. I have to have some noise. 80’s music, white noise, or something that evokes the setting I’m writing in. (I even found a website that has the noise of the Star Trek engines, love that one.)

What are your hopes for the future?

I have just recently become a full-time writer, so for the moment my hopes are that I can continue to support myself purely by writing, and spend the rest of my life doing what I love.

Do you have any advice for new authors about the publishing world?

The best bit of advice I was given was to keep your eyes on your own paper. Don’t compare your journey to a writer to anyone else’s, because it won’t be the same. Do what works for you, and don’t give up.
