Author Elle Cross #interview

Please give a warm welcome to author Elle Cross

Tell us a bit about yourself

Im Elle Cross and I write Urban Fantasy and Paranormal Romance! My debut novel, So Dark the Night launched March 1 (a year ago!), and since then, I published 8 more books with another one on the way!
Currently, I pay the bills as a makeup artist which means I have a massive makeup collection and can totes justify buying more!
When Im not playing with color or my imaginary friends, I am usually watching movies and eating an unholy amount of food with my hubs.
I still claim NYC as my home even though I now living in the Midwest.

Have you always wanted to become an author?

I have been a writer my entire life (seriously, I kept a diary/journal for as long as I can remember), but I dont think I wanted to be an author or pursue that as a career until about 10-12 years ago. I know its weird since Ive always loved reading, and I went to school for literature and creative writing, but I never had the idea of publishing my own words.
One random day, my husband told me that he thought I should write the books that I loved to read, and those words would permeate my brain and be the start of my journey toward published author.

What was your inspiration for your current book/series?

Immortelle was inspired by the cover. I saw it and immediately reminded me of Ruby Rose, which got me thinking: What if John Wick was gender swapped, and it was the woman who lost her husband? And what if she was a vampire who lost her human lover?
The idea seized my mind, and instead of working on the current project that was on deadline (So Dark the Night), I worked feverishly in the night to brainstorm the story and the blurb.
What are you working on now?
Now that Maestra (Immortelle Book Two) is locked and loaded in Amazon, I am working on a collaboration that is almost complete, and the third book of my Brightling Court Series, So Deep the Ocean.

Do you have any quirks while writing?

Nothing too quirky: I listen to a combination of pink noise (which is like white noise but softer) and my current projects playlist.
I call myself a hybrid plotter. I love the idea of outlining but I dont necessarily follow the outline as I write.
As far as my process, I handwrite the ideas of my novel first, and whatever I remember from memory, I go with. If I get lost, I’ll go back to my notes and go from there.

What are your hopes for the future?

Short-term? I hope to finish at least two series this year—Immortelle and Wolf Singer Prophecies. I have a pretty ambitious schedule and I hope to deliver at least the ten stories I have planned (not including my collaborations).
Long-term? I would love to be able to write full-time—I can only imagine how many more books I can publish when I’m not being distracted by a corporate day job 60-70 hours a week, LOL

Do you have any advice for new authors about the publishing world?

There is a different between the art and craft of writing and the business of publishing. Its hard to keep it separate sometimes, but please remember that you define your own success.
Keep a growth mindset and a focus on writing the best story you can deliver for each book. Release yourself from the obligation that you need to deliver a perfect (or even good) story. Just write the best story that you are able to write in the moment, and trust that you can deliver.
And, when things feel rough, remember why you started writing in the first place.
Do you have anything to say to your fans?
I love you! Thank you for reading my books and sharing this dream with me.
